A clean, structured product catalog that is easy to work with.
We structure your catalog so it is reliable and easy to use: attributes, variants, product page quality, connected to your PIM and DAM.

Your catalog is inconsistent: incomplete product pages, unclear attributes, duplicates, and bad product data.

Why catalog quality is a strategic issue
An incomplete or inconsistent product listing has three direct consequences: fewer conversions (the buyer hesitates and leaves), more returns (product specs do not match expectations), and lower SEO visibility (Google penalizes listings without structured content). In a Baymard Institute study, 20% of abandoned purchases on e-commerce sites were attributed to insufficient product information.
For a brand selling on multiple channels (own store, marketplaces, distributors), the problem compounds. Each channel has its own requirements: Amazon enforces 250-character titles and 7 images, Google Shopping requires GTIN attributes and white-background images, a distributor may require a specific CSV format. Without a catalog management process, the product team spends its time reformatting the same data.
Components of a well-structured catalog
- Attribute model: each product family has a defined set of attributes (dimensions, materials, colors, compatibility). A missing attribute on an entire family is flagged automatically.
- Variants: the variant structure must be consistent within a family. A model mixing color/size with color/weight in the same structure breaks filters and collection SEO.
- Text quality: title, short description, long description, SEO tags. Each field has a distinct role and a target length. Duplicated text across similar listings hurts SEO.
- Visual quality: minimum image count per listing, required formats (white background, three-quarter angle, detail shot), optimized file size for speed. Without a DAM, checking this quality is a manual process.
- Completeness: a completeness score per listing (e.g., 100% = all required attributes filled, 3 images, full text) lets you prioritize corrections.
Catalog audit: what we consistently find
Across catalog management projects Smartshift has audited, recurring problems include: duplicate SKUs (from successive migrations), attributes used inconsistently across families, descriptions copied between similar products, and missing images on 15 to 40% of SKUs depending on how old the catalog is.
| Problem | Business impact | Observed frequency |
|---|---|---|
| Duplicate SKUs | Stock errors, double orders | Very common on migrated catalogs |
| Inconsistent attributes across families | Broken filters, degraded collection SEO | Common |
| Copied descriptions (duplicate content) | SEO penalty, high bounce rate | Very common |
| Missing images | Listing abandonment, lost conversion | Present on 15 to 40% of SKUs |
| SEO titles too short or generic | Low long-tail visibility | Very common |
| Stale pricing (ERP out of sync) | Loss-making orders, customer disputes | Common without connected PIM/ERP |
Catalog governance: who does what
A catalog degrades without clear rules on who creates, who approves, and who publishes listings. Catalog governance covers: roles (product manager, merchandiser, editor, approver), workflows (listing created, reviewed, approved, published), naming conventions, and automated completeness checks.
On Shopify, that governance relies on apps like Matrixify for bulk imports, and an external PIM once volume exceeds a few hundred SKUs or multichannel enters the picture. For a store with fewer than 200 single-channel SKUs, a well-structured Excel process can be enough.
Preparing a catalog for migration
An e-commerce migration is the ideal moment to clean up the catalog. The steps: full export from the source platform, SKU deduplication, attribute normalization, completeness check, and visual audit. This upfront work reduces import errors and avoids carrying technical debt into the new platform.
How long does a product catalog audit take?
For a catalog of 500 to 5,000 SKUs, a full audit (completeness, attributes, text, visuals, SKUs) takes 5 to 10 working days. The deliverable is a quality report by product family with prioritized, costed corrections.
Do you need a PIM to manage your catalog?
Not necessarily. Below a few hundred single-channel SKUs, a PIM is often overkill. The relevance threshold is around 500 active SKUs, selling on 2 or more channels, or translating into multiple languages. We will tell you directly whether a PIM adds real value at your current stage.
How do you measure catalog quality?
With a completeness score (percentage of listings with all required fields filled), a duplicate content rate (identical text across listings), a rate of listings without images, and the number of duplicate SKUs. Those four metrics cover the main business and SEO risks.
